Workington, a historic market and industrial town near the mouth of the River Derwent, serves as West Cumbria’s primary retail hub. The town’s northernmost portions are located in areas that date back to Roman times. Workington grew to become a significant industrial town and port in the 18th century as a result of the exploitation of the region’s iron ore and coal mines.
Workington’s history has long included the production of iron and steel, and it was here that Henry Bessemer initially unveiled his ground-breaking method for producing steel. The town has expanded into new industries in recent years due to the demise of the steel sector and coal mining.
Workington prides itself with being the prime shopping and entertainment destination in west Cumbria featuring many high street shops, theatres and a multi-screen cinema.
